Francesco Hayez was the leading artist of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and exceptionally fine portraits. Il Bacio is also a tribute to the romantic and patriotic ideals of the Italian unification movement (the Risorgimento), the embracing couple representing the alliance betweeen Italy and France.
